properties_of_annealed_polypropylene_nylon_6_and_linear_low_density_polyethylene_blends.pdfPROPERTIES OF ANNEALED POLYPROPYLENE, NYLON 6 AND LINEAR LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE BLENDS

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to strengthen the properties of polypropylene (PP) at temperatures of 120°C to 140°C by blending with Nylon 6 (PA6). The melting point of PP is 163°C and that of Nylon 6 is 224°C. The lendings were done in an injection moulding machine and samples were made for mechanical testings. Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was also added for the study. Annealing on blends at 160°C was carried out and the mechanical properties were measured at room temperature. AUTHOR: C.V. effect_of_alkyl_alkanol_on_the_penetration_of_water_in_an_amphiphatic_structure_with_rbd_palm_olein.pdfEFFECT OF ALKYL ALKANOL ON THE PENETRATION OF WATER IN  AN AMPHIPHATIC STRUCTURE WITH RBD PALM OLEIN

ABSTRACT: The effect of a series of alkyl alcohol on the penetration of water into a lamellar liquid crystal structure in the presence of a vegetable oil, RBD palm olein was carried out by employing small angle x-ray diffraction technique at 30°C. A reduction in the penetration of water was found when RBD palm olein molecules were present in the lamellar liquid crystal structure. This reduction in the penetration of water was highest in the alcohol series with the longest chain. AUTHOR: Hamdan Suhaimi

application_of_rice_husk_ash_as_abrasives_in_scouring_agent_composition.pdfAPPLICATION OF RICE HUSK ASH  AS ABRASIVES IN  SCOURING AGENT COMPOSITION

ABSTRACT: Scouring agent compositions containing rice husk ash (RHA) as abrasive material in an aqueous medium having three essential components i.e. sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, fatty acid diethanolamide and sodium sulphate were studied. Six samples of RHA of particle sizes ranging from 31.4 to 9.7 µm in diameter were incorporated into four formulations to study the effect of particle size on viscosity, product's features and stability. The formulation containing 35% and 40% of RHA size 9.7 µm produced a creamy product which was smooth, homogenous, easily pourable and stable. AUTHOR: Ropien Jokiman and Zulaikha Paidi

application_of_cascade_analysis_for_energy_and_process_integration_of_a_batch_process_plant.pdfAPPLICATION OF CASCADE ANALYSIS FOR ENERGY AND PROCESS INTEGRATION OF A BATCH PROCESS PLANT

ABSTRACT: Energy and process integration which has been successfully applied in continuous processes was investigated for a batch process. This paper discusses the possibility of using Cascade Analysis to identify the opportunitites for direct heat exchange, storage and rescheduling. This analysis was shown to be able to identify all the opportunities for energy and process integration besides giving other information such as the location, time, temperature range and amount of heat that could be stored or generated in the batch process. Based on these information more ideas for improvement were identified which in turn enabled more energy to be saved. Rescheduling of the process reduced the cycle time to less than half that of the original and the plant capacity was increased by 70%. AUTHOR: Zuhaimi Mar'ee

ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study is  to  form  a blend consisting of starch in  a polymer system. Tapioca starch (TS) flour was mixed with low  density  polyethylene (LDPE) to form LDPEffS blend. The investigations involved treatment on the TS flour, mixing and compounding of different proportions of TS flour with LDPE to produce the LDPEffS blends. Compositions with up to  20% (weight/weight) TS flour  have been successfully achieved. Properties such.as tensile modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness, melt flow index and density were determined for these blends. The tensile modulus, hardness and density of the blends were found to increase with increasing amount of TS flour. The tensile modulus, hardness and density of the blends containing 20% TS flour were 139 N/mm²,  45 Shore D and 0.95 g/cm3  respectively. It was also found that the values of tensile strength, elongation at break and melt flow index decreased with increasing amount of TS flour; these values at the 20% TS flour compositions were 11 N/mm² ,  37% and 3.95 g/1O, respectively
