ABSTRACT: This second ageing paper is focused mainly on the various mechanisms used to explain the low temperature degradation phenomenon in Y-TZP ceramics. An understanding of the ageing phenomenon in Y-TZP ceramics has been established and discussed. In general, although the theories are contradictory in nature, it has been universally accepted that the cause of degradation was due to the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation. ABSTRACT: The applicability and limitations of the fringe projection technique was investigated by measuring the surface profile of a fan blade and comparing the results with those obtained using a coordinate measuring. machine (CMM). An automatic fringe tracking method was used to analyze the fringe pattern on the blade surface. The technique was initially tested by measuring the surface profiles of cylindrical surfaces. Comparison of the fringe projection and CMM results together with an error analysis has revealed that the fringe projection technique gives results, which are in agreement with those obtained using CMM. However, the tilt of the fringes and the effect of uncollimated illumination were found to contribute. significantly to the error in the fringe projection technique. ABSTRACT: By using coal as a source of electricity generation at the Tenaga Nasional's Kapar power station, the availability of fly ash in Malaysia is now assured. Quality controlled fly ash when incorporated in concrete enabled many of the properties in the fresh and hardened states to be intentionally improved. No design data on the properties of concrete using fly ash from the local power station is available. In-depth investigations into the material, structural and durability characteristics of 'Malaysian' fly ash concrete are conducted at the University of Malaya to provide the much-needed data. This paper presents some of the engineering properties of 'Malaysian' fly ash concrete. Workability, compressive, flexural, tensile splitting, drying shrinkage, elastic modulus and nondestructive tests were performed on fly ash and control OPC concrete specimens. Data show that concrete containing 25% fly ash replacement of cement exhibit superior or similar engineering properties to that of normal concrete without fly ash. These encouraging results demonstrated the technical merits of incorporating fly ash in concrete and should pave the way for wide scale use of this versatile material in the Malaysian construction industry. ABSTRACT: This study investigates the properties of plasticised styrene-butadienestyrene thermoplastic elastomers for possible applications in pharmaceutical, medical and food industries. Unplasticised styrene-butadiene-styrene (USBS) materials: Vector 8550-D and Vector 4461-D, which are developmental materials introduced by Exxon, and blends of Vector 8550-D with Vector 4461-D were plasticised with paraffinic-type plasticisers Plastol 172 and Plastol 352. Shore A hardness, tensile stress at break, modulus au 00% strain, eongation at break and density values showed a decrease whereas flow properties such as melt flow index (MFI) increased considerably with increasing plasticiser cor:icentration. ABSTRACT: Software was developed to assist planning and scheduling of the flow of jobs in a batch manufacturing system. In this project, studies were made on those existing heuristic algorithms that could be used to solve scheduling problems in order to obtain optimal or near optimal solutions. Appropriate heuristic algorithms were chosen and programmed. The job sequencings both in serial machine centre and parallel machine centre systems were covered. The algorithms used were shortest processing time method (SPT}, Johnson algorithm, Campbell et al., and Kaspi -Montreuil algorithms. The software was developed using Borland C++ version 5 and constructed using object oriented programming. ObjectWindow Libraries (OWL5) included in the Borland C++ version 5 helped to shorten the time and effort required to develop the program. The platform for developing the software was the 32-bit operating system, Windows 95. This software is typical window programme having common characteristics of a window application. ABSTRACT: The need for a product model which can support the modelling requirements of a broad range of applications leads to the use of feature-based techniques. An important requirement in feature-based design and manufacture is that a single feature representation should be capable of supporting a number of different applications. Assembly and process planning are seen as two crucial applications and a formal structure for their representation in a feature-based design system is presented. This paper addresses two basic questions relating to the lack of a unified definition for features and the problem of representing assemblies in a feature-based representation. A prototype system has been implemented using object-oriented techniqueswhich provide a natural method of adding functionality to the geometric reasoning process of features and the complex relationships between the parts that make up the assembly.
