ABSTRACT : his paper addresses the development of a product design support tool based on mathematical model related to cycle time information, that is by modeling a multistage, multi-product production line system that can process a variety of products in a batch production environment. Products are processed according to a predefined sequence. The design tool is intended to be used at the early phase of product design in view of assisting the product development team develop products in a shorter time. ABSTRACT : Continuation power flow can be described as a power flow solution, which is used to analyze the stability of power system under normal and disturbance conditions. The main purpose of Continuation Power Flow is to find a continuity of power flow solution for a given load change. Although this approach has several deficiency, many researchers found out that this is still a better approach to cater the problem faced by the previous method (Newton-Raphson dan Fast Decoupled Load Flow). The continuation step, parameter variation and the reliability of the system are still in question. This paper discusses several issues including the needs, demands and expectations of continuation power flow. Several solutions have been proposed by the previous researchers is been discussed. ABSTRACT : Prediction of cutting force of metals by simulation before machining is carried out is considered very important in order to save machining cost especially in ensuring longer life of cutting tools. This paper describes the use of neural network, fuzzy logic and response surface method to predict the cutting force model of P20 tool steel. The cutting force is taken as a response whereas the variables used are cutting speed, feed rate, axial depth and radial depth. A model of cutting force is developed using response surface method and has been compared with artificial intelligence method. The models obtained using neural network, fuzzy logic and response surface method are compared and presented in this paper. The result of this cutting force prediction is found to be satisfactory since the results are similar to experimental results. This result shows that feed rate has the most significant effect on the cutting force, followed by axial depth, radial depth and cutting speed. Moreover, the increasing use of high-performance materials makes it possible to manufacture components with outstanding properties. These developments have brought about considerable improvements in tool life,mechanical properties and performance achievement in service applications. The special properties of hardmetals have made them an indispensable material not just in metal cutting. ABSTRACT : Residual levels of paraquat in two major Malaysian rivers was quantified using solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The assay method provided adequate sensitivity, specificity, linearity, accuracy, and precision. Inter-day precision and percentage inaccuracy were between -2.4 % and 0.9%, Intra-day precision and percentage inaccuracy were between -11.2% and 8.6% and average recovery was between 81%-98%. Limit of quantitation (LOO) and limit of detection (LOD) for this method was 0.6 ng/ml and 0.3 ng/ml respectively. Paraquat was detected in two Malaysian rivers mainly in the range of ppb. The highest concentration of paraquat was observed in Pertang (1 .83 ng/ml) and Klang (2.29 ng/ml) rivers. ABSTRACT : A sensitive gas chromatograph-mass spectrometric (GCMS) method for the determination of bisphenol A in human urine sample was developed and validated. Bisphenol A was extracted from urine sample by solid phase extraction (SPE) using C18 cartridge. Bisphenol A-d14 analogue was used as surrogate standard. Addition of bisphenol A-d14 and enzymatic deconjugation of the urine sample was performed prior to solid phase extraction to determine total bisphenol A originating from free bisphenol A and bisphenol A-glucuronide. Bisphenol A was analysed after derivatization with BSTFA using GCMS with quadrapole detector in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. Mean recoveries for bisphenol A were 92.1%, 98.7% and 94.5% at 0.1, 0.5, and 0.9 ng/ml concentration, respectively. The quantification limit for bisphenol A in urine was 0.05 ng/ml. ABSTRACT : The use of a micro electromechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensor in an intelligent tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is described in this paper. The study involves the analysis of the MEMS sensory data that contributes significantly towards the enhancement of the TPMS. A detailed overview on the sensor, theory of operation, the assembled TPMS prototype and experimental data analysis were presented in this paper. For the purpose of this experimental study, data acquisition was performed on the intelligent prototype TPMS that was fitted on to a tyre rim. Threshold check was used to acquire the TPM output signal on tyre pressure and temperature data. A complete set of information for all four tyres comprising the measured pressure, temperature, receiver wake-up signal, header, tyre ID, checksum, and end of message in the TPMS receiver were also analyzed. ABSTRACT : Commercial nickel molybdenum supported on alumina catalyst NiMo/Al2O3 was used for hydrocracking of gas oil under various operating conditions, reaction temperature in range 300-450°C, contact time 30-120 min and catalyst to feed ratio 0-0.08 using newly designed high-pressure shaking reactor. The product consists mainly from liquid, gas and coke. A total conversion of 59.61wt% and a maximum value of 51.91wt% of liquid product (total distillate fuels) were obtained at temperature of 450°C, 90 minutes contact time and 0.04 catalyst to feed ratio. ABSTRACT : This paper describes a study on the effects of work piece hardness, feed rate, cutting speed, and axial depth on the output parameters of tool life and surface roughness finishing when machining raw material of Vanadis 10 using KC850 and K313 Kennametal inserts. The Vanadis 10 is widely applied in manufacturing of dies and moulds especially in applications where tooling made from cemented carbide tends to chip off or crack. Statistical analysis method utilizing response surface methodology (RSM) is applied and shows that the effects on tool life and surface finish roughness are statistically significant. ABSTRACT : Insulation coordination models are an essential part of power system studies and are used to determine the expected overhead line backflashover rate. This paper gives a general background of the insulation coordination and explains its importance. The need to perform lightning-strike studies for insulation coordination of high voltage lines is discussed in terms of the levels of interruptions / damage that result from such events. The paper explains the lightning overvoltage and gives the importance of lightning protection for transmission lines. The process of backflashover and methods in computing backflashover and shielding failures rates will also be discussed, particularly the comparison between the CIGRE and IEEE methods. ABSTRACT : In this paper two different diameters of spherical shape commercial pure titanium powders were compacted using simple pressand- sinter method, in order to find if this route can be applied to produce good sintered samples. Part of this work was done on Ti-6Al-4V (wt%) composition with irregular shape aluminium and vanadium powders. Effect of various experimental parameters (compaction pressure, sintering temperature and sintering environment) on the density and hardness as well as sample forming ability in the pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy are investigated. The success of this method depends on the quality of the powders, correct processing technique, and the properties of the sintered samples. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to test and validate the UPM Satellite Simulator Facility (SSF) platform. The work relates to satellite testing and qualification experiments. The satellite Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) consist of flight-proven equipment from Canada, Germany and America. The flight hardware check has to be performed for the SSF qualification. Therefore, dedicated test procedures in order to test and verify the satellite control mode (i.e., Idle mode, Detumble mode, Coarse Pointing mode and Fine Pointing mode) has to be implemented. The results of these experiments are discussed to qualify the health of the satellite itself and the ADCS equipment. ABSTRACT : Linear displacement sensor is used to detect the actual displacement of the moving objects in the Linear DC Motor (LDM) (Wakiwaka et al, 1996). The accuracy of the detection is very important to make sure the production process operate properly. The displacement sensor based on the inductive concepts has been developed. It is composed of the sensor head and pattern guide. The combination of the sensor head and pattern guide is important to get the high accuracy of the positioning. Sensor head is made from copper material while pattern guide is made from soft iron SS400. The displacement of pattern effects to the output voltage for various input frequency and exciting voltage has been observed and discussed in this paper. From the results obtained,output voltage increases as the input frequency and exciting voltage increases. In term of hysteresis and linearity, input frequency 20kHz and exciting voltage 1.0 volt is the best performance of sensor. ABSTRACT : This paper aims to demonstrate how the QFD technique helps the authors to design an anthropometrical measuring equipment based on the input of the users. The development steps began by conducting a survey of users or customers to identify their wants and evaluate the current equipment, drawing planning matrix, identify and drawing technical requirements of the equipment, and perform technical benchmarking to improve the performance of current equipment to complete the QFD matrix. Based on the QFD matrix, 3 different conceptual designs of anthropometrics measuring equipment were generated. By using the scoring matrix concept, the authors then selected the best design to be fabricated. Prior to anthropometrics survey, trial on anthropometrical measurement was conducted on the fabricated prototype to investigate how well it is fit for use to measure the anthropometrics dimensions. The authors found that this fabricated anthropometrical measuring equipment could be used to measure forty-six anthropometrical dimensions in the sitting and standing posture, based on trial anthropometrics measurement. ABSTRACT : A combination of effective index method (El) and twodimensional beam propagation method (20-BPM) is adopted in modelling a rib optical waveguide structure. An effective index method based on bisection root finding procedure and 20-BPM simulation based on finite difference scheme is carried out on MATLAB® programming platform. Results are compared with several numerical and analytical methods including commercially available software from Optiwave® Corporation. Simulated structures showed very promising results with proposed methods. The proposed method can be further used to model a trapezoidal cross section structure, a typical output from chemical wet-etching optical waveguide fabrication technique.
